I ask you to vote against the appointment of Robert Duecaster, one of the most divisive figures in our county, to our Human Services Task Force. In this unique budget year, there will be unusual pressure on this committee to prioritize goals and outcomes in a way that reflects the values of our community. While I recognize it is not customary to subject appointments for our Strategic Goal Task Forces to a deliberative process, I want to call attention to Mr. Duecaster's record of racially insensitive remarks and hateful outbursts. Below is a link to video footage of some of Mr. Duecaster's more memorable appearances at Citizens' Time, one of which culminated with a direct threat to the Board of Supervisors: "We are going to repel this invasion, one way or another! You can either be part of that repulsion, or you can be part of the side." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45DFErK5LEw In addition to insensitive remarks about the Hispanic community, Mr. Duecaster's writings have included offensive remarks concerning Muslims, the Catholic Church, people of color and the list goes on and on. In my view, Mr. Duecaster's behavior is a poor model for civic participation, one we should not reward or invite others to emulate. Additionally, it sends the wrong kind of message for a county that seeks to remove the conflict and intolerance that threatens our economic future. I ask you to exercise your vote to request a more suitable representative of Prince William County government, and the good people it has sworn to serve.
